Literacy Development In The Waldorf Kindergarten: An Action Based Research Project

Abstract:

This action-based research project explored the connection between play and the development of early literacy skills in a public, Waldorf-based kindergarten classroom at Ocean Charter School in Los Angeles Unified School District. The researcher posited that a language rich, play based program is the optimal learning environment for the young child between the ages of 4 and 6. However, as noted in current research and testing trends, there is a move away from play in kindergarten programs across the nation.
