A Rogue Teacher’s Take on Learning Beginning Recorder and Music Literacy

Jacob Carr

Many educators in Waldorf based schools are expected to provide music education without having been taught how to teach it. Based on observation, more training in music education is required for the development of teachers working in Steinerbased schools. Through participant observation and action research, I created a 4day intensive workshop, and an online distancelearning course designed to introduce the fundamentals of soprano recorder playing and standard western music notation to teachers. As a result of this course, teachers will be able to play simple melodies sightread from standard western music notation. I also call to action further standardization and a group consensus on what it means to host a Waldorf music education.
